On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the signature of the UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, the European External Action Services organized an international conference on "The role of the European Union on the Protection and Enhancement of Cultural Heritage in conflict and crisis.”

The conference explored the dynamic relationship between cultural heritage and peace in the 21st Century. It also discussed perspectives on how the European Union could enhance cultural heritage as a component for peace and dialogue, and integrate it in its security strategies, development and peace-building processes.

The conference gathered experts from the European Union and its Member states, international and regional organizations, international foundations, civil society and academic world.
