The regional conference of the South Programme "Building a Common Legal Space: A Decade of Joint Action in the Southern Mediterranean Region" was held at Casa Mediterráneo in Alicante, on 8 and 9 June 2022.

The conference was successful in drawing lessons from a decade of tripartite cooperation between the European Union, Council of Europe, and programme Beneficiaries in the region, and provided a platform to exchange on challenges and perspectives in order to continue the joint action in the next phase of the South Programme to be launched in autumn 2022.

More than 100 professionals, representatives of authorities, governmental and independent institutions, civil society organisations in region as well as representatives of the European Union and of the Council of Europe participated in the panel discussions reflecting on results achieved, lessons learnt, common trends identified and challenges encountered of the South Programme.

The programme "Regional Support to Reinforce Human rights, Rule of Law and Democracy in the Southern Mediterranean" (South Programme IV) is a joint initiative between the European Union and the Council of Europe over the period March 2020 - August 2022 with the objective to support democratic reforms in the Southern Mediterranean region.
